This guide will take you through the basics of setting up your first Mark 1 computer using SCOPE, the default operating system included for free.
This Quick Start guide assumes you are setting up a simple keyboard-only computer. Additional peripherals that are compatible with your Mark 1 are available, and certain use cases may not require a monitor or keyboard, or may need other peripherals. For such advanced uses, please refer to the full Guide to Operations.
To get started, you'll need five things, plus a place to set up your Mark 1 computer:
The System Unit, Keyboard, and Monitor are included in your Mark 1 package.
You will get the Display Attachment once you are ready to turn on the Mark 1 for the first time.
You must get a copy of the SCOPE Install Disk separately for free.
Rez the System Unit, Keyboard, and Monitor in-world and arrange to your preference.
The Mark 1 can only be used while seated. You will need to rez these components where visible from a seated position.
You will need to connect your Keyboard and Monitor to your System Unit so they know to communicate with each other.
You can also use the Connect To option on any peripherals you wish to connect to a single System Unit, then use the Get Connect option to connect them all at once.
You will need to attach a Display Attachment and optionally activate gesture controls before you boot your Mark 1.
The Display Attachment will add about 33,000 to your avatar complexity score. As such, it is a good idea to detach it when you are not using a Mark 1, and reattach it before you use a Mark 1 again.
You do not need to use the Display Attachment from a specific Mark 1; it will work for any Mark 1, though a newer version may be available if you use the Get Disp key.
Other people can also get a Display Attachment using the Get Disp key.
The gesture controls will allow you to type in real life and have your keystrokes transmitted to the Mark 1 in-world.
Gesture controls may not work correctly if you have other gestures activated that also bind keyboard keys. We strongly recommend that you disable all other gestures when using your Mark 1. Additionally, some viewers may not allow certain keys to be bound by gestures, though most will only restrict modifier key combinations (such as Ctrl+I).
You are ready to start your Mark 1 for the first time! Make sure you are seated in front of the Mark 1 and proceed.
Your Mark 1 comes pre-installed with LE-BIOS, the basic software required to boot your Mark 1. An updated LE-BIOS version may be available but is not necessary for this Quick Start guide. If you would like to update your LE-BIOS version, refer to the Guide to Operations.
Your Mark 1 should boot into LE-BIOS and should display of the following messages:
No bootloader found
: Your Mark 1 booted successfully, but you still need to install SCOPE. Skip to Step 5.SCOPE - Script Controlled Process Environment
and a C:\>
prompt: Your Mark 1 booted successfully, and SCOPE was already installed and set to boot to the console. You are finished! Refer to the Guide to Operations for further assistance.SCOPE, or the Script Controlled Process Environment, is the default operating system provided by NBS for the Mark 1. The next steps will guide you through installing it.
